From early privately run yards servicing local graziers
to today’s nationally recognised selling centre,
the saleyards tell a story shaped by producers, agents,
workers and families whose livelihoods
and communities have grown alongside them.

From early trading to municipal yards (1863–1941)

Cattle trading has formed part of Dalby’s identity since 1863, when multiple privately owned saleyards operated across the town.

The most prominent of these was located at the corner of Alice and Eileen Streets, serving a growing grazing district and supporting early settlement and regional development.

By the late 1930s, increasing livestock numbers brought new challenges. Droving cattle through Dalby’s main streets to several small saleyards caused dust, congestion and disruption for residents and businesses. In September 1938, a public meeting was called to find a solution.

The proposal was ambitious for its time: a single, purpose‑built set of saleyards capable of handling cattle, sheep and pigs in one location, reducing livestock movement through town. Momentum quickly followed. In May 1939, the Dalby‑Wambo Saleyards Board held its first meeting, chaired by then Mayor Alderman Thomas Jack with H.E. Thorley as Clerk.

The Board was officially registered in June 1940, laying the governance foundations for a new era of livestock selling in Dalby.

That vision became reality in July 1941, when the Dalby Municipal Saleyards officially opened at the corner of Nicholson Street and Wilkes Street.

The first sale, conducted by Australian Estates, marked the beginning of a structured, centralised and more efficient cattle selling system for the district.

Expansion, resilience and modernisation (1942–1990)

Post‑war growth and increasing demand soon placed pressure on the original municipal yards. By the early 1950s, the Dalby‑Wambo Saleyards Board began investigating new sites, selecting land on Yumborra Road in August 1952.

Detailed planning followed, including site visits to Cannon Hill Saleyards and the Brisbane abattoir to inform best‑practice design.

Construction of the new saleyards represented a major investment for the region, with the Board agreeing to borrow £73,000 in January 1956. The first sheep, pig, calf and vealer sales were held in the new yards in October 1957, followed by the first cattle sale in October 1958.

Over the decades that followed, the saleyards weathered both growth and challenge. The 1974–1978 cattle market crash, driven by global oversupply and oil embargos, saw prices fall dramatically and tested the resilience of producers and agents alike. Through it all, Dalby remained a key marketing centre for the region.

Innovation continued to shape operations, including the installation of live‑weight scales in 1978, further modernising selling practices and improving transparency for buyers and sellers.

The 50‑year anniversary of the Dalby‑Wambo Saleyards Board was celebrated in 1990, marking half a century of structured livestock selling in Dalby.

Technology, regulation and renewal (1991–2009)

The late 20th and early 21st centuries brought significant change across the livestock industry.

Market reporting expanded, new selling agents commenced operations, and regulatory reform increased the focus on traceability and biosecurity.

The introduction of the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) in Queensland in 2005 replaced traditional tail tags with electronic identification, transforming livestock traceability and compliance.

Major infrastructure upgrades followed, including a nearly $600,000 receival yard upgrade completed in 2007, improving efficiency, safety and animal welfare.

In 2008, local government amalgamations saw the Dalby‑Wambo Saleyards Board disbanded, with operations transitioning to Dalby Regional Council, later renamed Western Downs Regional Council.

The Board was officially shuttered in April 2009, closing one chapter in the saleyards’ governance history while ensuring continuity under council management.

A modern, nationally significant centre (2010–present)

Since coming under Council management, the Dalby Saleyards have undergone significant redevelopment and renewal.

Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Redevelopment Project, completed in 2013 and 2015, delivered new receival and delivery yards, upgraded air drafts and ramps, improved pedestrian safety, additional roofing and specialised soft flooring in holding pens.

The saleyards achieved EU accreditation in 2017, opening access to premium export markets and reinforcing Dalby’s reputation for quality and compliance.

New selling agents have continued to join the yards over time, reflecting confidence in the facility and its role within the industry.

Today, the Dalby Regional Saleyards is recognised as one of the largest livestock selling centres in Australia, selling more than 200,000 head of cattle each year. With almost half of Australia’s feedlot capacity located within 200 kilometres of Dalby and 84 registered feedlots across the Western Downs, the Saleyards remain central to both the regional economy and the national beef supply chain.

The history of the Dalby Saleyards is one of adaptability, innovation and community partnership. From dusty stock routes and private yards to a modern, world‑class facility, the saleyards have evolved alongside the people and industries they serve.

As the livestock sector continues to change, driven by technology, sustainability and market demands, the Dalby Regional Saleyards will continue to invest, adapt and innovate.

Grounded in their history and looking firmly to the future, the yards remain a lasting tribute to the cattle industry’s deep roots in the Western Downs and its vital role in Australia’s agricultural story.
